Ryokan Dietary Guide is an independent English-language resource for international travelers with food allergies, vegan diets, or halal requirements who want to experience traditional Japanese inn (ryokan) culture.
Why This Site Exists
Traditional kaiseki meals served at ryokan are a highlight of any Japan trip — but the menus are often full of hidden allergens (dashi, soy, shellfish) and almost never vegetarian or halal by default. Navigating this in Japanese, from abroad, while managing a food restriction is genuinely stressful.
This site was created to remove that stress: clear guides, copy-paste email templates in Japanese, and curated lists of ryokan that actively accommodate dietary needs.
What You’ll Find Here
- Allergy guides — common allergens in ryokan cuisine, how to communicate restrictions, what to do on arrival
- Vegan & vegetarian options — ryokan with plant-based kaiseki or flexible menus
- Halal-friendly ryokan — certified or pork/alcohol-free options across Japan
- Booking templates — Japanese-language email scripts you can copy and send
About the Editor
I’m Wata, a Japanese writer based in Japan, and I built this site because I want every international visitor to experience ryokan the way locals do — without the anxiety of managing a dietary restriction at the table.
Japan has so much to offer, and the ryokan meal is one of its most memorable parts. You shouldn’t have to miss it.
